Perfectly customizable for any home bar or kitchen, wooden coasters are incredibly easy to make and perfect for the beginner craftsman or craftswoman. All it really takes is some precise (or imprecise, depending on the style you wish to achieve) cuts, a little to a lot of sanding, a tiny bit of finish, and the optional design you want on the coaster.

But until then, I’ve been thinking of other ways to use my hands and create things.  (Even though many of our saws and tools have been stolen.) But I’m feeling a little antsy to make some quick projects, because creating makes me extremely happy…..so we’re calling this surge in me to create something simple, THERAPY.  In fact, I need to call up a few friends and have them make some with me because friends and creating is a favorite combo of mine!  (Any out of town-ers want to fly in?! ;) )

Although refrigerators long ago rendered them obsolete, antique oak ice boxes remain popular with collectors, even though they’re expensive and hard to find. This do-it-yourself version is neither: it’s both inexpensive and easy to build. An authentic reproduction of an original, the project is especially popular when used as a bar, but it has many
Thinking my orders were now correct, I went to install the slides, and found you had sent me an odd number of Left/Right Blum drawer clips (they are sold in pairs. I ordered pairs. You sent me 5 right and 3 left). I emailed Teresa, personally, and guess what? No reply. So I called, and someone told me Teresa had quit. This new person apologized and said she'd send me a Left clip the same day.
All About Wood:  What are the different characteristics of wood – how does each move, shrink, expand, respond – and how does one allow for all of this in design and building?  How do different woods respond to tooling and machinery?  What are practical considerations in selecting woods for different types of furniture – along with aesthetic considerations, finishing characteristics, issues with availability, cost, purchase sources, and environmental considerations?

This class is open to woodworkers who would like to broaden their approach to furniture making. What do we mean by this? We think it means you are a person who has decided to commit to learning furniture making; is yearning to develop a finer sense of design; has already acquired some woodworking skills and has a strong sense of the limitations of your own knowledge and skills.
How often do you go to close a cabinet door or drawer and it slams shut, making a seriously loud noise and throwing the contents of the cabinet or drawer all about? If you're like the millions of people without soft-close hinges, then it probably happens more often than you'd like it to. Not to mention, the hip-bump technique to close a cabinet drawer usually results in a loud bang and that's like your go-to move. Luckily for you and everyone else who hates it when their cabinets slam shut, it's relatively easy to install soft-close hinges or dampers. But before you decide yes or no, take a minute to look over the benefits of installing some soft-close hardware for cabinets.
Traditionally furniture makers learned their craft working as an apprentice in the Master Craftsman's shop.  We’re offering this course as a second step in a furniture making apprenticeship, building on woodworking skills by deepening your understanding of design, expanding your range of joinery and decorative techniques to build well designed and robust furniture.
Just make sure to use non-toxic wood and non-toxic finishes like Raw Linseed Oil or Carnauba Wax so that dangerous chemicals from other woods and finishes doesn’t contaminate the food that goes onto the cutting board. You can also opt to include an indent for the knife, so the chef can put the knife into the cutting board when the knife is not currently in use.

A super simple iPad Dock/stand made out of a single block of wood features an angled groove which gets to support the tablet device and a cut in a hole to revise access to the home button of your iPad. It’s possible to drill an access channel in the stand through which you can run a charging cable, although this mini stripped back iPad stand may have very limited functions.

Take just a few minutes to look back at how your days and weeks have been unfolding. What time of the day are you the most focused? Do you prefer to be more social at certain times of the day? Do you have difficulty concentrating after lunch or are you energized? Are there days when you can’t seem to sit still at your desk and others when you could work on the same project for hours?

Aside from the privacy it offers, a latticework porch trellis is a perfect way to add major curb appeal to your home for $100 or less. The trellis shown here is made of cedar, but any decay-resistant wood like redwood, cypress or treated pine would also be a good option. Constructed with lap joints for a flat surface and an oval cutout for elegance, it’s a far upgrade from traditional premade garden lattice. As long as you have experience working a router, this project’s complexity lies mostly in the time it takes to cut and assemble. Get the instructions complete with detailed illustrations here.
This course is focused on developing the skills that will allow you to start to find your voice as a furniture designer / maker. Design will be the consistent thread through the numerous projects of this class. We will take a hybrid approach to furniture making by blending traditional hand tool techniques with pragmatic use of woodworking machines.

All it took for us to elevate a basic knife block ($25.95; cutleryandmore.com)? A pencil and some paint. Begin by spray-painting the block with two coats of Rustoleum's white semigloss ($4.19 for 12 ounces; amazon.com). Allow two hours of drying time between coats; then let them dry overnight. Next, lay the block faceup. Using the knives you plan to keep in the block, lay one utensil atop the block in a spot that reflects the blade's placement when stored; carefully trace the shape with a pencil. Repeat with the other three knives. Fill the inside of each shape with another paint color—we used Benjamin Moore's Clearspring Green ($6.49 for 16 ounces; benjaminmoore.com). Let dry for two hours , add a second coat, then let dry again before inserting the cutlery.

With the right tools, you can crank one of these bad boys out in less than a day’s work. It’s definitely more of a niche item, but don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s not versatile! You can use one of these to display a bowling trophy, a prized-collectible action figure, a family photo that has to stand out from the rest, and even most foods that don’t taste like cake!

Work Study:  Students may apply for our Work Study option.   In return for acting as Shop Monitor during open shop periods, MSF will reduce the student’s tuition.  Shop monitors must be present in the shop during assigned hours primarily to enhance safety (assigned hours will not conflict with class hours).  Among other responsibilities, Shop Monitors make sure policies are honored and are responsible for the leaving the shop in good order at the end of their shift.  If space is available, Monitors may use the shop to work on their own projects during their shifts.  Our preference is to award work study positions first to students experiencing financial hardship.  Please notify us if you are interested in work study .  For more information, see our Tuitions & Registration page.

Making over plain cotton upholstery fabric requires nothing more than a household disinfectant and water. Working outside, and wearing protective eyewear and gloves, lay the desired yardage for your project flat on a sheet of plastic. In a measuring cup, mix together ½ cup bleach and ½ cup water. Use a plastic spoon to drib-ble the liquid all over the fabric. When you're satisfied with the pattern, let dry, then run the fabric through a regular cycle in your washer and dryer. Take it to a local upholsterer (we sent ours to tapemeasure
