I know I’ve been a little MIA but we’ve had a big project in the backyard, an overwhelming workload (which we planned on being MUCH less), and then decided to hire out for some help to haul away a huge amount of dirt.  Unfortunately, that ended up with the guy we hired stealing from us…..uggggh.  When will we ever learn to not be so trusting?!  Steve and I both have a problem with that……but when did being “too trusting” become such an extreme character flaw?!!  Sad.  Anyway, the whole situation is under investigation and there are some definite twists to the story that the crime-show-watcher in me would love to share with any other crime-show-watching enthusiasts out there. ;) Hopefully soon.

Cut six strips of fabric from one towel. Two, measuring 33⁄4"W x 141⁄4"L each, will serve as the decorative horizontal bands at the top of the tote and should incorporate the towel’s graphics (as shown, left). The other four, measuring 31⁄2"W x 8"L, will form tabs for the bag’s handles. Turn under the long sides of each strip and press a 1⁄4" hem.
We’ve already done rope, and now we’re on to another rustic material we love: wood! It’s as basic of a material as clay and is constantly reinvented by DIYers, crafters, artists, hackers, and carpenters. To get inspired to create our own batch of cool wooden objects, we turned to our favorite fellow makers to see what projects they’ve come up with. Scroll down for our top DIY wood project picks.

Craft projects that don’t require you to go out to the craft store and purchase a lot of supplies can be difficult to find, which puts a crimp in crafting plans when you don’t have a lot of money to spend. Although most of these projects do require you have materials on hand, most are things the average person has around the house (scraps from previous projects, old clothing, salt, soda bottles) or are things you can easily obtain for free (leaves, rocks, twigs, shells).

For the last six years, Bob Miller CF '11, small business owner and Shop Technician for the Continuing Education Department, has not made many changes to his private bench space. However, three years ago he acquired what he now considers his favorite and most useful tool: an emmert pattern makers bench vice. "That is by far the most used tool in my shop." he says "It's unusual, rare, and was manufactured sometime between 1898 and 1915, making it at least 100 years old."
Great instruction — Lonnie is a master woodworker and a master teacher as well as a published author, known for his many woodworking books and articles. Lonnie has been woodworking for more than thirty-five years and teaching for over twenty-five. In other words, Lonnie has a background of woodworking skills to teach from. He’s not simply a magazine editor or tool salesman that works wood occasionally and teaches a few days each year; he has made woodworking and teaching woodworking his full-time passion (take a look at Lonnie’s work).

The space behind a door is a storage spot that’s often overlooked. Build a set of shallow shelves and mount it to the wall behind your laundry room door. The materials are inexpensive. Measure the distance between the door hinge and the wall and subtract an inch. This is the maximum depth of the shelves. We used 1x4s for the sides, top and shelves. Screw the sides to the top. Then screw three 1×2 hanging strips to the sides: one top and bottom and one centered. Nail metal shelf standards to the sides. Complete the shelves by nailing a 1×2 trim piece to the sides and top. The 1×2 dresses up the shelf unit and keeps the shelves from falling off the shelf clips.

For most of us, this habitual tendency to force our bodies and our brains into patterns of working that undermine our productivity result in achieving less than desired results and adding more stress to our already overburdened lives.

Step 3: Place your lampshade upside down on a flat surface. Apply a line of hot glue along the length of one stick's back side, and adhere it to the lampshade, placing the notched handle end flush against the top edge (the ends of the sticks may extend past your shade's bottom edge). Repeat with remaining sticks, placing them side by side until the lampshade is covered. Finally, flip it over and position your shade on a pendant- or table-lamp base to really brighten a room.
