The space behind a door is a storage spot that’s often overlooked. Build a set of shallow shelves and mount it to the wall behind your laundry room door. The materials are inexpensive. Measure the distance between the door hinge and the wall and subtract an inch. This is the maximum depth of the shelves. We used 1x4s for the sides, top and shelves. Screw the sides to the top. Then screw three 1×2 hanging strips to the sides: one top and bottom and one centered. Nail metal shelf standards to the sides. Complete the shelves by nailing a 1×2 trim piece to the sides and top. The 1×2 dresses up the shelf unit and keeps the shelves from falling off the shelf clips.
We have a great location — Our woodworking school is located near Knoxville, Tennessee. We are very accessible (within a day’s drive of 70% of the population in the USA!) for USA woodworkers. While many of our woodworkers come from Southeastern USA locations such as Atlanta, we also have woodworkers who come from further-away places such as Texas, California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Maine — 43 states so far and counting! We’ve even had woodworkers come from other countries — as far away as Australia! Additionally, our location near the Great Smoky Mountains and Gatlingburg ensures that there is an abundance of fantastic activities for you or your family to experience as well.
The beauty of this project lies in the simplicity. All you need are 3 pieces of wood of your choice (though we must admit natural hardwoods will look incredible), sanding block, clamps, wood glue and finishing product. The hardest step of the whole tutorial is measuring – as always, measure 9 times, cut once! You wouldn’t want to finish your project and then realize it doesn’t have enough space to fit your DVD player, would you?
Training Length & Times: Each professional training session (Fall, Winter, Spring) is 12 weeks in length and may include students at the Basic, Intermediate, or Master level. Our entire program takes 9 months to complete and so we recommend that students enroll in 3 consecutive sessions in order to complete the full curriculum. Students attend small-group lectures, receive individualized instruction, and complete specific projects that are designed for their experience level. Class instruction is available Mondays-Fridays from 9:00am-4:30pm with a 1-hour break for lunch. The shop remains available for independent student work from 4:30pm to at least 8:00pm on most days. The school is closed on holidays and there is a break between sessions and over part of the summer. See our current schedule for specific session dates.
We mentor each student to develop the advanced skills needed to express their own inspired, distinctive style. For example, we may explore the design nuances and practical considerations of working with specialized, exotic woods and surface textures, along with associated unique finishing techniques. We constantly seek those sweet, memorable moments when both instructor and student recognize the student’s shift into their next level of mastery.
