Established in 1906, the College for Creative Studies is a small, private, fully-accredited institution of higher learning. Diversity and inclusion characterize the student body: undergraduates hail from 35 states and 24 countries; while the graduate population is comprised of 81% international enrollees from 8 countries. Located in Midtown Detroit, students enjoy the long-established, rich culture of the city. From the Detroit Film Theatre and the Detroit Institute of Arts; to the libraries, galleries and famous restaurants; both college and students can leverage the educational opportunities provided by the urban community.
This class is open to woodworkers who would like to broaden their approach to furniture making. What do we mean by this? We think it means you are a person who has decided to commit to learning furniture making; is yearning to develop a finer sense of design; has already acquired some woodworking skills and has a strong sense of the limitations of your own knowledge and skills.
We do the busy work — Instead of standing in line to use one of our planers, Lonnie and his assistant plane the lumber for the Woodworking Essentials project before your class begins. When it comes to DIY, the whole point is to recycle, reuse, and reduce, but sometimes that does come at a cost. Have you ever started a DIY project, only to realize you need about a dozen things from the store and in the end it would have just been less expensive to buy the piece brand new? Or maybe you’ve done a DIY project that you found online, but it just didn’t turn out quite how you expected. The great thing about these 20 projects is that they can be done for little to no cost! Here are 20 free DIY projects that have all been done with the free color swatches that you can pick up at your local paint store!

Work Study:  Students may apply for our Work Study option.   In return for acting as Shop Monitor during open shop periods, MSF will reduce the student’s tuition.  Shop monitors must be present in the shop during assigned hours primarily to enhance safety (assigned hours will not conflict with class hours).  Among other responsibilities, Shop Monitors make sure policies are honored and are responsible for the leaving the shop in good order at the end of their shift.  If space is available, Monitors may use the shop to work on their own projects during their shifts.  Our preference is to award work study positions first to students experiencing financial hardship.  Please notify us if you are interested in work study .  For more information, see our Tuitions & Registration page.

Training Length & Times:  Each professional training session (Fall, Winter, Spring) is 12 weeks in length and may include students at the Basic, Intermediate, or Master level. Our entire program takes 9 months to complete and so we recommend that students enroll in 3 consecutive sessions in order to complete the full curriculum.  Students attend small-group lectures, receive individualized instruction, and complete specific projects that are designed for their experience level.  Class instruction is available Mondays-Fridays from 9:00am-4:30pm with a 1-hour break for lunch.  The shop remains available for independent student work from 4:30pm to at least 8:00pm on most days.  The school is closed on holidays and there is a break between sessions and over part of the summer.  See our current schedule for specific session dates.

“Going to the furniture making evening class was the highlight of my week (and I wasn't the only person on the course to say that!) Emma was really brilliant at sharing her knowledge and experience to help guide us all through the tricky process of hand-making furniture, and thanks to her we all managed to make something we were proud to take home”   -    Kay Parnell, Student.
Thinking my orders were now correct, I went to install the slides, and found you had sent me an odd number of Left/Right Blum drawer clips (they are sold in pairs. I ordered pairs. You sent me 5 right and 3 left). I emailed Teresa, personally, and guess what? No reply. So I called, and someone told me Teresa had quit. This new person apologized and said she'd send me a Left clip the same day.

Professional Series Completion:  To fully complete MSF’s 9-month Professional Training program, students will need to attend all three levels of training: Basic, Intermediate, and Master-Level which collectively equal 36 weeks / 9 months of classes, and satisfy all class requirements for each level.  Students may enroll in 3 consecutive sessions (Fall, Winter, and Spring – in any order), and complete the entire professional training within 9 months – 1 calendar year.  Alternatively, students may space their training sessions out over a longer period.  For example, they may attend 1 session per year (Fall, Winter, or Spring – in any order), in which case completion of all training levels may take 3 years.  Students enroll in each level/session independently of all others and are not required to commit to / take all three levels of training, though completion of the entire series is highly recommended.  There are significant tuition discounts for students who, at the start of their training, enroll in multiple, consecutive 12-week sessions.
Look at the bigger picture. Consider what happens during different months or times during the year. Think about what is going on in the other parts of your life. When is the best time for you to take on a new project, role or responsibility? Take into account other commitments that zap your energy. Do you have a sick parent, a spouse who travels all the time or young children who demand all of your available time and energy?

One tip is to arrange your books so they look like a smooth landscape of rolling hills. Put the tallest in the middle and fan out to the smallest or create multiple peaks (as long as the books flow together) or lay a few books on their side and stack them like a pyramid. For seven more tips to a visually organized bookshelf, click here.

Not to mention, the hip-bump technique to close a cabinet drawer usually results in a loud bang and that's like your go-to move. Luckily for you and everyone else who hates it when their cabinets slam shut, it's relatively easy to install soft-close hinges or dampers. But before you decide yes or no, take a minute to look over the benefits of installing some soft-close hardware for cabinets.
